AP correspondent Donna Warder reports. One USAID contractor working in an often violent region in the Middle East speaks of waking up one morning earlier this week and being blocked from access to government email and other systems. And the person says an emergency panic button app on their smartphone had been wiped off, putting the contractor and family in danger because they weren't able to reach the U.S. government for help if needed. The Trump administration had assured that the U.S. government would bring agency workers home safely within 30 days, but some fear being stranded in the field and left to make their own way back. Donna Warder, Washington. A U.S. federal judge on Wednesday ordered a second nationwide pause on President Trump's executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for anyone born in the United States to someone in the country illegally. U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman said "no court in the country has endorsed" the Trump administration's interpretation of the 14th Amendment. "This court will not be the first." Trump's birthright citizenship order was already on temporary hold because of a separate suit brought by four states where a judge called it "blatantly unconstitutional." Twenty-two states in total, as well as other organizations, have sued to try to stop the executive action. The Trump administration asserts children of non-citizens are not subject to the jurisdiction of the U.S. and therefore not entitled to citizenship. President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday intended to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls' and women's sports. The order gives federal agencies wide latitude to ensure entities that receive federal fundingabideby Title IX in alignment with the Trump administration's view, which interprets sex as the gender someone was assigned at birth. Title IX prohibits sexual discrimination in schools, meaning any school found in violation could potentially be ineligible for federal funding. It is the latest aggressive shift by the Republican president's second administration in how the government views transgender people and their rights. Trump has already ordered the government to define sex as only male or female. The latest order was condemned by trans rights advocates, including the National Women's Law Center.

Trump freezes all foreign aid for 90 days 25 Oct 2026

Some South African organizations that assist people with HIV are in limbo after the United States put a 90-day freeze on most foreign aid. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said he wants to bring the agency's activities in line with the new government's "America First" agenda. Kate Bartlett reports from Johannesburg. South Africa has the highest number of HIV-positive people in the world, about 8 million, but has also been a huge success story in terms of treatment and preventing new infections. That's largely due to the money poured into expert HIV care here, some 17 percent of which comes from a U.S. program called the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR. But a 90-day foreign aid funding freeze is in effect, following an executive order by President Trump last month, while the State Department has issued a waiver to continue paying for "life-saving" services. What that includes remains unclear to many South African organizations that receive funding from PEPFAR. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this week that the waiver was clear. "If it saves lives, if it's emergency life-saving aid - food, medicine, whatever - they have a waiver. I don't know how much clearer we can be." The South African government says it was blindsided by the U.S. aid freeze, according to Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, who convened a meeting about PEPFAR on Wednesday. Motsoaledi also said he has sought clarification on the waiver. "If you say American money cannot be used for LGBTQWI+ and we do the counseling and testing and somebody who falls within that category, transgender, tests HIV-positive, can they not be helped? Even if it's lifesaving?" On Wednesday, a group of health organizations sent a letter to the South African government saying at least 900,000 patients with HIV were directly affected by the U.S. stop-work orders. Kate Bartlett, VOA News, Johannesburg. President Trump's move to freeze most foreign aid has also brought health care services to a halt at refugee camps on the Thai-Myanmar border. Reuters correspondent Fiona Jones reports. A group of Thai medics battled to save the life of elderly Myanmar refugee Adabi. Previously the U.S.-funded International Rescue Committee would have treated her and the tens of thousands of other refugees living in camps on the Thai-Myanmar border. But President Trump's freeze on most foreign aid has forced seriously ill patients like Adabi to rely on Thailand's state-run facilities instead. Last week, the government vowed to support refugee health care following the U.S. aid suspension. US Birthright Citizenship Abolition Order Halted Again 24 Oct 2026

Hi, I'm VOA's Alexis Strope with your worldwide news update. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order formalizing his announcement earlier this week that he'll freeze assistance to South Africa for a law aiming to address some of the wrongs of South Africa's racist apartheid era. The White House says the law amounts to discrimination against the country's white minority. As long as South Africa continues to support bad actors on the world stage and allows violent attacks on innocent, disfavored minority farmers, the United States will stop aid and assistance to the country, the White House said in a summary of the order. The White House said Trump is also going to announce a program to resettle white South African farmers and their families as refugees. The order also references South Africa's role in bringing accusations of genocide against Israel before the International Court of Justice. President Donald Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship faces another legal challenge. AP correspondent Haya Panjwani reports. A federal judge in Boston will consider a request from 18 states to block President Donald Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship for the children of parents who are in the United States illegally. The hearing comes after a federal judge in Seattle blocked the effort and said Trump was trying to change the constitution with an executive order. Plaintiffs in the Boston suit also say Trump's order would cost states funding. They rely on it to provide essential services like foster care, health care for low income children and early interventions for infants, toddlers and students with disabilities. Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell: "... but newborn babies are not criminals. This order targets innocent newborns that have done absolutely nothing wrong. They do not deserve to be punished solely because of their parents' immigration status." US lab paves the way for quantum internet 23 Oct 2026

When news spread late last year that the Fermilab National AcceleratorLaboratoryin suburban Chicago was part of a project achieving quantum teleportation, it conjured up scenes from the classic science fiction franchise Star Trek in which the show's characters could beam from one location to another. That's not what we're doing here. What we're doing here actually is we're moving information without even physically moving the qubit that contains information. Fermilab scientist Panagiotis Spentzouris is one of the co-authors of a study documenting the advancement of sending or teleporting information or qubit, a unit of quantum computing code. Over 40 kilometers through fiber cables, it brings developers one step closer to building a sustainable and widely used quantum internet, which would allow a lot of information to be shared faster and more securely. Quantum communication has very appealing attributes. I mean, you cannot eavesdrop in a way that will not be detected. What we achieved here with the systems is that we have produced systems that they can continually operate and perform quantum measurements at all times as a system, not just as a single experiment. Physicist Maria Spiropulu, based at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, says quantum teleportation could sustain networks that enhance GPS and speed up and amplify communication at great distances with spacecraft and probes, among many other possibilities. While building a new quantum internet would revolutionize the way we share sensitive information, the physical technology to make it all work is still in its infancy. You're trying to make them forward compatible so that when material scientists and condensed matter people give you more instrumentation and devices, more advanced devices that you can plug them in. In 2020, the US Department of Energy laid out a blueprint for a national quantum network using its 17 national laboratories, including Fermilab as the central network for the project. Scientists and researchers say it represents one of the most important technological frontiers of the 21st century and hope to implement it in the next decade. There has been a lot of investment worldwide and in the US, for I want to say 30, maybe 40 years, it is well funded and explored, and there's both industry and academia and government that has invested. But experts say today's technology which only teleports information is still a long way off from realizing the dreams made popular by Star Trek. It doesn't mean that we can beam up Scotty or anybody else or a cat or anything else. We cannot move matter right now, and if we ever manage to do it, it's going to be with a different process. A process that unlike quantum teleportation still only exists in the realm of science fiction.

Invisible touchscreen 22 Oct 2026

What if you could control your car, turn on your oven, or sign your name by touching an invisible screen? Ultraleap, a British and California firm, uses ultrasound waves to create the sensation of touch mid-air. A camera tracks hand motions. You can keep your eyes on the road. You can feel the button go click. Ultraleap works with museums, car manufacturers, and other industries to create invisible screens in mid-air, and with augmented reality headsets to bring more information to people's experiences. With the pandemic, Ultraleap turned its technology toward touch screens in restaurants and stores, touch screens that some people no longer want to touch. People are becoming so much more conscious of what they're touching, particularly in an out of home environment, where they don't have so much control over what they're touching, and what may have touched it before. The technology may take a little getting used to. In a car to control music, temperature or the map, there are two gestures to learn. One is a pinch gesture which is used for selection, and then the other one is what we call the drop the mic gesture, where you just release your hand like that. The driver can feel vibrations with the gesture as if you are physically touching something. You're feeling little pulses at each increment of the setting. It's a new way of interacting with machines touch free and in the air.

The US commemorates the 35th anniversary 21 Oct 2026

January 28th, 1986, before a television audience, seven passengers aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger took flight from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Among them was Christa McAuliffe, who was selected in a nationwide search for a teacher to be NASA's first citizen passenger in space. I don't think any teacher has ever been more ready to have two lessons in my life. I've been preparing these in September, and I just hope everybody tunes in on day 4 now to watch the teacher teaching from space. Just 73 seconds after takeoff disaster after a rubber seal in one of the shuttle's twin booster rockets failed, triggering an explosion that doomed all on board. Then president Ronald Reagan eulogized the crew and called them heroes. And while the flight exposed failures in NASA management who ignored safety warnings from scientists, it's widely regarded as planting the seed for shuttle development in today's commercial space flights. Companies like SpaceX have even flown missions to the International Space Station, where on Wednesday astronauts Michael Hopkins and Victor Glover spacewalk to finish installing a European science platform and complete long-term battery upgrades. The advancements can further research on Earth observation, robotics, material science and astrophysics. This according to a tweet from the space station's twitter account. Back on Earth, climatologists sounded yet another alarm this week. An estimated 28 trillion metric tons of ice have melted from icesheetsand glaciers since the mid 1990s. That's 57 percent faster than it was three decades ago, per report scientists published Monday in the journal The Cryosphere. 57%。 In that time, global sea levels have risen three and a half centimeters, while the global temperature has gone up by one degree Celsius. Finally this week, abutcherin Scotland sent a bag of haggis into the atmosphere. Simon Howie's bag of organ meats climbed more than 32 kilometers before falling back to the ground. He claims it was the first haggis to reach such heights and says he hopes it inspires children's interest in space.

Developing El Niño becomes strongest on record week 20 Oct 2026

Scientists say the developing El Niño is already the strongest ever recorded, with sea temperatures in a key region of the Pacific more than three degrees above average, and this event is not expected to peak until later this year. El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon that occurs when unusually warm water develops across the tropical Pacific, disrupting weather patterns around the world. The Met Office says its impacts are already being felt, with wildfires in Indonesia and low water levels in the Panama Canal restricting international shipping. As it develops, it's expected to bring droughts and wildfires to parts of Australia, South America and southern Africa, while coastal Peru and Ecuador face the threat of torrential rain and flooding.

Return of the sleeper train in Europe 19 Oct 2026

The Sun has set, and you're headed to a train station in Stockholm with your overnight bag. You board the sleeper train, change into your comfortable clothes, enjoy the scenery through the window for a while before laying your head down to rest. Snoring from the other passengers in your shared cabin delays your bedtime, but the gentle motion and white noise eventually send you to sleep. The next morning, just over 12 hours later, you wake up in Germany's second largest city, Hamburg. "It still sounds like a long time, but you go to sleep, and it's such a nice atmosphere on the train," says Julia Senninger, a fan of sleeper trains. Before budget airlines made flights across Europe so quick and cheap, sleeper trains were a popular way to cover large distances without wasting daylight or paying for a place to stay. After a period of decline, sleeper trains in Europe are making a comeback.Belgian-Dutch company European Sleeper launched the Brussels to Milan route in September 2026 and has announced a new route connecting Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden, scheduled to open in 2028. Other train companies Trenitalia and Nightjet have also announced plans for new international routes. Companies are rushing to meet high demand. The rise in popularity is partly due to changing attitudes and increased awareness surrounding climate change. The carbon footprint of an electric-powered train is just a fraction of a flight. But there's more to it. Sleeper train fan Julia Senninger says trains are simply more fun. You meet more people and can have interesting conversations. Cat Jones, founder of the flight-free travel agency Byway, says, "The point of travel is the experience rather than just the arrival." So, people are buying into the idea that the journey to your destination is also part of the trip. Besides the convenience of starting and ending your journey in a city centre, there's also a sense of romance and adventure when you imagine whizzing through unknown landscapes and foreign villages while you sleep. In Europe, the sleeper train comeback does not come without challenges. Competing with budget airlines, some sleeper train routes have disappeared, even while new ones have launched. Problems with infrastructure, cost and availability mean that the high demand for a more sustainable travel option is not currently being met.

Is social media still 'social'? 15 Oct 2026

For many people, social media is a normal part of everyday life. It's used to keep in touch, entertain and follow what's happening in the world. But numbers from DataReportal indicate that the average use of social media is around two hours 21 minutes a day. That's nearly 15 hours per week or about 32 days a year! The same report also mentions that people are using social media more passively. This means they're spending a lot of time scrolling on their feed, sending memes and reacting to things with emojis instead of sending messages. Could it be that social media platforms are negatively impacting the way we interact with people, and are they taking time away from us actually being social? One study looked at what happened when social media was deliberately limited. In The effect of self-monitoring limited social media use on psychological well-being, researchers in the United States studied 230 university students. One group was asked to limit social media use to 30 minutes a day, while the other continued without a limit. After two weeks, the group limiting its use reported lower levels of loneliness, depression, anxiety and FOMO. Sleep is another part of the picture. For many people, scrolling through social media has become part of their bedtime routine when they should be winding down to rest. Research published by the National Library of Medicine has examined the effects of blue light from electronic screens. This light can affect the body's natural sleep-wake cycle and increase alertness. Reducing screen time before bed may therefore help some people prepare for sleep. Better sleep can also provide more energy for work, hobbies and lay the groundwork for more successful and fulfilling face-to-face social interactions. These findings do not necessarily mean that you have to completely quit social media. Instead, it may be worth considering how much time is being spent online, and what that time could be used for instead. Small changes might include moving the social media app away from the home screen, using social media only at certain times, or accessing it through a computer rather than the phone you probably have with you all the time. The idea is not to disconnect from the online world completely, but to create a better balance between online and offline life. Reducing the use of social media could free up time to take part in more rewarding hobbies and encourage you to connect with people in real life rather than through a screen.

Tulsa Remote 11 Oct 2026

I first heard about Tulsa Remote, I felt like it was kismet. I was thinking about leaving the Bay area where I was living in San Francisco. And so, I was searching around for, you know, different locations like researching where, you know, what's the cost of living like? What is the quality of life like in different cities? And I looked at all the, kind of, obvious things that I think people migrate from California to, which were Portland, Austin, Seattle. And, you know, I just kept coming up with the fact that those cities have, kind of, been overplayed at this point. And when I was doing this research, an article for Tulsa Remote popped up in my news feed, and I thought, like, that's super interesting. Ten thousand dollars to move somewhere. But then I was also, had to, like, take a step back and go "Where is Tulsa, Oklahoma?" Tulsa Remote is an innovative program which seeks to bring remote workers from across the country with various diverse skill sets in order for them to have an opportunity to join our community. The program was created as it's truly an additive talent program which brings people with jobs to Tulsa in order to see a better life for themselves and their families. I made this list and I said, you know "What do I need? Do I need 700 restaurants? No, I probably need, like, three restaurants. Do I need all of these bars? No, but I do want some culture. I do want a sense of community. I would like, you know, a reasonable cost of living, the ability to buy a house." I never anticipated even when I was flying out here, that it was something that I was seriously considering. I was, kind of, like, "This is interesting. I'm going to go with an open mind. I'm going to see what this is about. But probably, like, this is probably not going to happen." And by the end of three days, I was sitting there with another participant that had come to visit and we looked at each other, we said, he was from New York and we said, "Are we doing this? Are we actually going to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma?" Over half of our applications come from California and New York. And those folks are looking for a higher quality of life. They're looking for more space. They're looking for the ability to purchase a home. They're looking for the opportunity to engage more deeply with the community. They're looking for that presence where they know people by their first names. And that's something that Tulsa can provide. I rolled into town and I immediately had 50 plus connections. I can't imagine, like, trying to make that solo move to a new town as a remote worker. And how do you even start making those connections, right? I mean, we had instant community built-in already for us. They helped us, you know, even with simple things. "I don't know how to change my driver's license." You know, like, people from the program would help us with this. The ten-thousand-dollar headline number for Tulsa Remote grabs attention. However, the disbursement of the checks really just de-risks the proposition of moving to Tulsa. We found that people come for many different reasons. Cost of living, quality of life, ease, lack of pollution, all kinds of reasons. I felt so at home that I have now purchased a home here because it is affordable. I purchased a home. I got a boyfriend. I mean, I feel like I'm the Tulsa Remote success story.

I'd like to show you what comes to mind just as an example. And we're just going to use these three half-dollars right here. Focus on this first one. Three coins, two hands, no sleeves, no bracelets. So, you think of things happening that's impossible, but you're making the impossible possible and you're also creating astonishment. So, when you think about magic, you have to think about creativity and most importantly, making the impossible possible. What is real? So, I got started in magic, not when I was young like most people. I got started in magic when I was in graduate school at Penn State studying health education research. It was just a hobby for me, something to do to just to pass the time, card tricks. Me and a group of friends, we used to get together and do card tricks. So, I just took a leap of faith and I just said I'm going to give myself one year. If it doesn't work out in one year, I'll just go back to school, get a job and just continue on with life. Well, one year ended up being 16 years and I haven't looked back yet. So, that's when I decided I want to do magic full time. I believe that every artist should use their platform to talk about greater issues beyond their art. So, there's some elements in my show that are subtle and then some that are not subtle, that I speak about those issues and I let people into my world and what I think about it. For example, I was performing in Iowa one time. It was at a college campus but it was two hours outside, two-and-a-half hours outside of Des Moines, Iowa. I get there. I set up. I'm behind the curtain. I peek out. 500 people here. I was like, "Oh my gosh. Okay, I know exactly what I'm going to say." As soon as the emcee announced me, I walked on stage. The first words out of my mouth is, "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming to the show. When I got off the plane this morning, the Black population increased by 100 percent." Now, it came off as a joke but as they say, there's truth in comedy. That's proof that some stereotypes are true. And it resonated with everyone because they realized, wow, this is not a diverse town. Wow, I've never seen a Black magician before, but we've always been out there. As a matter of fact, one part of my show, I'll talk about the very first American-born magician by the name of Richard Potter. So, prior to Houdini, prior to Doug Henning, prior to David Copperfield, prior to David Blaine, the very first magician on American soil was a Black man. And that's something to be proud about because people like Richard Potter, Henry Box Brown, Hiawatha Johnson Jr., these are all African American magicians. If I could see it, I could be it.

Let growth go beyond skin color 09 Oct 2026

We were at the Union at the university. That's basically a place where people come and relax and you check your emails and your class schedules. And I just happened to see this head of curly hair and I had to get closer to her. And the closer I got, the better she looked. And I had to introduce myself. So, here we are 20 years later. I have three kiddos. Isaac is our oldest. Ian is our middle child. Isabella is our youngest. She's seven-and-a-half. We homeschool them. We have for the last five-and-a-half years. Our children, they do have the best of both worlds in having a Black father and a white mother. In life, they don't have to think about choosing a side. I'm originally from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines which is in the eastern Caribbean. I was evacuated due to a volcano in 1979. I was seven years old at that time, came to United States, lived in New York City for a few years. And I also was in the military myself. The only questions that the kids have asked us about race is, "Dad, why is your skin darker than Mom's?" And, so, I went ahead and took a DNA test and I explained all that to them. Daddy is 50 percent Nigerian. Daddy is 25 percent from Sierra Leone. Daddy is 11 percent Scottish. Daddy has four percent Native American. Daddy has three percent Asian. So, I break it down for them. As far as what we're teaching them, it's what's appropriate for their age. We don't put them in that environment where they can be harmed or anyone can share their negativity with them. So, we protect our children. They're still trying to learn how to do their multiplication tables, you know. So, the issue of slavery and systemic racism, you know, that's not at their level at this point. But we're not clueless that it's there. And in due time, as those discussions come into play, he's like you're old enough, you're mature enough, it's time for you to learn this. And it may come up because our child has a question, or it may come up because of something they're exposed to. Couple months ago, there was protests right here in our neighborhood. They chose South Lincoln neighborhoods, where we live, because they felt that they needed to expose South Lincoln. So, the kids got to see that first-hand right here at the end of our street and what that looked like and it was a peaceful protest. But then when they see something on the news that's violent and people are literally hurting each other and causing vandalism, that's not a peaceful protest. That's literally riots. And so, I've talked to them about knowing that we live in Nebraska and in some regards their exposure looks very, very different than if we lived on the East or the West Coast.

Why we like collecting things 08 Oct 2026

People collect all sorts of things. I collect fridge magnets, so my fridge has slowly become a colourful map of everywhere I've been. I also have fond memories of collecting rocks and shells from the beach with my mum when we’d visit the coast in summer. It’s true that some people collect natural objects such as fossils and interesting stones, while others bring home souvenirs from their travels. There are also people collecting miniature versions of real commercial products and tiny replicas of familiar objects, for example scaled-down retro toys, classic board games and action figures. In this way, collectables can be both decorative and functional, giving us something nostalgic to look at or fiddle with when bored. But why do people have such a strong desire to collect things? One explanation is that collecting gives us a sense of order and achievement. Happiful, a mental health and wellbeing magazine, wrote that adding to a collection creates a sense of progress and accomplishment. According to an article published in the Journal of Consumer Research, titled Seeking Structure in Collections: Desire for Control Motivates Engagement in Collecting, collecting can help people feel more in control. It explains that collections can become an extension of our identity. The things we collect reflect our hobbies, interests and loyalties. However, not everyone believes collecting is beneficial. Advocates of minimalism argue that owning fewer possessions improves wellbeing. As Beverley D'Silva reported for the BBC, the simplicity associated with a minimalist lifestyle may even contribute to greater happiness. From this perspective, filling our homes with collections can seem more like unnecessarily hoarding clutter. There is also an important distinction between thoughtfully curating your collection and simply accumulating more possessions. The Journal of Consumer Research article warns that some collectors can be drawn into excessive spending, especially when companies release new or rare additions to collections that were once considered complete. In those cases, collecting may be driven less by passion and more by pressure. Despite this, collecting remains as popular as ever. Perhaps the reason collecting endures is simple – collections tell stories. And displaying these collections can be just as satisfying as finding them. Happiful describes collections as a kind of self-portrait, reflecting our interests, personality and memories. Whether it's fridge magnets, shells or action figures, the real value often lies not in the objects themselves, but in the memories and meanings attached to them.

Part-human part-mouse brain developed in science breakthrough 07 Oct 2026

While mice with partly-human brains might sound a Kafkaesque experiment, the scientists say that these are not mice that think like humans, rather they're animals that are altered so that some of their brain tissue is human. The researchers engineered mice to develop almost none of their own cerebralcortex, that's the outer layer that's sometimes referred to as grey matter. It handles higher-level thinking, memory and senses. They then used skin cells taken from humans, reprogrammed them and grew them into pieces of brain-like tissue called organoids – collections of connected living brain cells. When these organoids were implanted into the mice, they formed connections with the rest of the brain and the spinal cord, functioning like brain tissue. Having working human brain cells inside a living animal, the scientists say, gives them a new way to understand the biological causes and develop treatments for brain disorders, including dementia, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. The study raises questions about what it means to change the brain of an animal and exactly how theselaboratorymice will experience the world. So, there'll be ongoing discussions weighing the scientific value of these mice against these ethical challenges.

Slum church 06 Oct 2026

For 14 years, we do it every Friday around this time. We come out and we feed people, right? We feed them first the spiritual word of God, we call it and then, we give them physical food. We let them know that "Hey, you don't have to come to listen to the word of God in order for us to give you food. If you just want to come when we're serving, you can come when we're serving. You don't have to listen to me. I'm nothing special. I don't have nothing great to say to you except for what's in the word of God." The hardest hit place in Los Angeles, still praising God, still giving him the glory, still coming out on Friday nights. And what I've started to notice is happening is that more and more people are coming back every week. There are all kinds of people who come here. There are people who are housed. There are about 9,000 people who are housed right here in Los Angeles. And what's in Skid Row, what's called Single Residency Occupancies, right there are little small apartments, kind of like the size of a jail cell, a small jail cell. There's a lot of good people down here, but it's like the has-beens, the ex-gang members, the ex-pimps or prostitutes, ex-parolees, ex-probation or their family just forgot about them. So, they end up coming down here. It's something down here and it's kind of like Paul, when he said in the church, during the, excuse me, "you can stay down here or you can go to heaven". When you come to Skid Row, you have to put on your Ephesians 6:18, your whole armor of God. Because even when you don't want to do something, you see somebody doing something, so you end up wanting to do it. About 400,000 people are at risk of facing eviction due to COVID-19 and all our elected officials are doing are passing eviction moratoriums. Well, after the moratorium, somebody has to pay that rent, right? And so, after the moratorium, all landlords are going to do is proceed with evictions, right, with the eviction process. And so, we're asking them to cancel rent. It's small movements like this that will shift theparadigm. We can't focus on the hate. We can't focus on what's going on in Washington D.C. We need to focus right here at home, individually with each person you meet and see.

Very hot drinks may increase cancer risk, study says 05 Oct 2026

The Oxford University team behind the study says any drink at or above 65C is "very hot" and poses a potential risk. Compared with people who drank "warm" beverages, those who consumed "very hot" ones had around a three times higher risk of squamouscell oesophageal cancer. There are several thousand cases each year in the UK, but experts stress the overall chance of getting this cancer of the gullet is still low. Smoking and drinking alcohol are far bigger established risk factors, although waiting a few minutes for your hot drink to cool a bit is advisable.

Dolphin research is dedicated to animal conservation. 05 Oct 2026

Dolphins are what we call charismatic megafauna, which means that people view them as charismatic. People get excited about some animals more than they get excited about others. But that's okay, because then we can use that to get them to conserve in general. So, if they're conserving the dolphins that means we're conserving their habitat, which means we are conserving all the animals that live in that habitat as well. Hi, guys. My name is Dr. Kelly Jaakkola. I am a cognitive researcher, right now work with dolphins. You want to do a high five? No? This one? You can't really reach. I know it is hard to reach up here. For other people, they might get inspired by the dolphin's beauty or their athleticism etc. I know. Very nice. I know. Oh, you want to come play too? What do you think? For me it was watching them think. Wow, now it's yourturn? Now it's yourturn? So, Dolphin Research Center is a non-profit research and education facility in the Florida Keys. And there are a number of questions that you can't answer in the wild. You'll see situations where they seem to be cooperating. They seem to be doing the same thing at the same time. But you can't tell from just looking at that whether or not they're understanding cooperation or if they're just doing something at the same time. In this study we set up a game. And the game was, we had two buttons and to win the game, the dolphins had to press the buttons at the same time within a one second window which is really, really close. So, in order to show that they understand cooperation, you have to sometimes send them at different times. Okay, so, Reese was sent first. And you see he doesn't go immediately to his button. And now Delta was sent and we'll see, and they did it! By the end of this study, they were pressing an average of a third of a second apart which is really tight coordination. The most obvious next step is okay, well how are they doing it? Are the dolphins using some sort of verbal communication? Maybe they are using synchrony, so maybe they sync up with each other and swim together etc. Other questions we can look at are: are there ways that that cooperation in the wild might be disrupted? So, for example, if they are using a kind of vocal communication, then noise pollution might get in the way of that. Alright, are you guys ready? Any sort of facility has to have a way of supporting their animals. And for us, that largely comes from the visitors that walk through the door. One of the big roles that marine mammal facilities play is getting people to make a connection in order to get people to conserve and then care. And it's that moment of connection that is the start of conservation mindedness. You know, it's fine to give people information. Information is great. But that information is only useful if people care enough to actually go out and do something.

Service Dogs and Surfing 04 Oct 2026

Ricochet was trained as a service dog but she was not placed because she likes to chase little animals, critters, squirrels. She would not make it as a service dog, but she also surfs. So, she surfs with people who have disabilities. So now I call her 'a surface dog'. She was eight weeks old. I had her in a kiddie pool and there was a boogie board and I kind of tapped it to invite her on it and she climbed on and had really good balance. So, from that I just continued playing around with it. I lay on the board and she stands behind me. There's a pusher, you know, another individual that will push them into the wave and Ricochet is really good at balancing the board for Hunter and in the beginning of his surfing that he needed that. I'm the only one who surfs in the family. There's a lot of trust that goes on with it, a lot of empowerment, especially kids with autism that don't get to really do anything on their own. There's usually supervision, but when they're in the water with Ricochet, they feel in control. And I always say to them, "Thank you for teaching my dog how to surf." So, they feel like they're the ones helping the dog instead. And it's just such an empowering feeling for the child. I'm Staff Sergeant Persons Griffith and I'm a PTSD awareness advocate. How was it? It's good. It's nice having her out there. It helps. When I met Ricochet, that was one of the more significant overwhelming moments in my life. I was having a really hard time and so I finally had a breakthrough and I realized how PTSD was affecting me. Ricochet was like a mirror for me. You can't hide things from her. So, she already knows exactly what's going on. And she just kind of reaches into your soul and pulls it out in front of you and says, you know, brings it to your attention and says, you know, this is what's going on. This is how you really feel. Let's deal with this. Let's accept it. Let's talk about it. After I got divorced, I moved down to Carlsbad to live with my parents and kind of recover from the divorce and the PTSD from the divorce. And we had physical abuse in that, you know, we had like the emotional abuse, all that abuse. So, I was kind of broken. When I met Ricochet, I felt like she really was like the glue that put my soul, my soul was broken and she put those pieces back together again and helped me rebuild my soul and rebuild my being. Sometimes she's very assertive as far as like she sticks her nose on you. She, earlier today, she paws at you because she knows like okay, you need to just stop. Look in my eyes, relax. And she just relieves like that stress or anxiety that you might have. And what I label Ricochet as is emotional rescue. So, she connects with people instantly and goes very deep into their soul with what she can pick up from them. And then she alerts and responds to whatever that emotion is. It's something that is instinctual. I didn't teach it to her. So, it's been a progression of growth, of me learning more about what dogs are capable of. So, the biggest thing is me listening to her. Ricochet's the type of dog that needs human interaction. The UK's favourite type of humour 03 Oct 2026

Over two thirds of Brits agree that being able to laugh at yourself, or what we call 'self-deprecating humour', is a defining part of British culture, according to a recent survey by the charity Comic Relief. British comedian Sir Lenny Henry says it's not about putting yourself down, it's about bringing people together. After years of doing stand-up comedy, Lenny says that laughing at yourself is "one of the quickest ways to feel connected to a room full of strangers". But when is it good, and when is it bad, to make fun of yourself? Can it be taken too far? When a person points out their own flaws in a light-hearted way, it can make them seem more human and make others feel comfortable. A 2025 study called 'When Laughter Hurts and Helps' linked the joy of being laughed at with higher social connectedness, in other words, a greater sense of belonging to a group. Conversely, the trait 'gelotophobe', or someone who fears being laughed at, has been linked to greater friendship avoidance and lower life satisfaction. Even leaders might benefit from self-deprecating humour. Lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business Naomi Bagdonas says that for today's leaders, 'Humour is an elixir for trust and an antidote to arrogance'. Making lightof negative situations can also be a coping mechanism. Imagine you're working on a group project, and something goes wrong. While everyone is panicking and trying to find someone to blame, you say sarcastically, "Well, this is going well!" This gives people permission to laugh a bit, and they might feel more positively about the situation. The challenge doesn't vanish, but at least people feel less tense and could feel more able to deal with the situation. A 2024 study published in Europe's Journal of Psychology found that maintaining a humorous perspective when things go wrong can lead to greater resilience. Of course, there's always a balance. While self-deprecating humour can bring people closer and make bad situations less overwhelming, it's important that it doesn't come from a place of bitterness and self-hatred. It's best to make jokes about yourself only once you've made peace with the flaw or mistake you're making fun of.

Virginia cellist goes viral 28 Sep 2026

Meet Andrew Savoia, a 24-year-old Northern Virginia cello player who is a social media sensation. He created his TikTok account savoiboi in July and in just a few months he already had millions of likes or views. There were some very catchy songs on the app and songs that you're just watching a video and it makes you want to get up and dance. And there was only like a quick little segment of that I would see and I was like, okay, I could try to recreate this on the cello, so I did that. I had one of my buddies record it and it was so fascinating because of the positive reaction that it received. I did not think that it would be received as well as it did. It was a stream of unhappy events that led Savoia to his social media success: a painful breakup, failing to get into medical school, depression. In a strange way all this contributed to his achievements. Music for me has been a way for me to like, I said, process emotion, experiences, memories that I've had. But it has an ability to heal because it can do the same thing for other people and it's very unifying. His process is simple: Find the song he likes and play it on the cello. I listen to lots of different kinds of music. I listen to hip hop. I listen to rock music, country music, sometimes lots of classical music and countless other genres. And I just try to do songs that have a melody line that would work well on this instrument. This instrument has such a diversity in its sound. But music will not be Savoia's career. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in neurobiology and plans to become a neurologist in the future. But his two passions, music and medicine, are inseparable, something one of his former teachers sees as well. I could definitely see a specific you know sector of the population who has a specific ear or depending on the type of illness that you have that you can actually be soothed by music. And if you watch him when he plays, and of course I only started watching him recently, he's very very passionate how he actually started playing the cello. Daydreaming: a distraction or a vehicle for ideas? 25 Sep 2026

Daydreaming has a bad reputation – we say things like "he's away with the fairies" or "she has herhead in the clouds" implying these people are inattentive, easily distracted, maybe even lazy. Is this reputation justified? Or is a trip to la-la land actually something that might benefit us? First, it's important to differentiate daydreaming from mind wandering. Mind wandering happens when you're busy with a task and your mind disengages from it, whereas daydreaming happens when you're doing nothing and spontaneous thoughts unrelated to your surroundings pop up. In a review of research called 'The costs and benefits of mind-wandering', the authors found mind wandering negatively impacted reading comprehension, attention, memory and intelligence. None of that sounds great, so are there any benefits at all? Activities that allow your mind to wander, like having a bath or meditating can lead to the 'aha' moment that you've been waiting for, which is why people often say they have their best ideas in the shower. This might work in the workplace too. In a 2021 study called 'Zoning out or breaking through? Linking daydreaming to creativity in the workplace', the authors concluded that "daydreaming carries noteworthy benefits for creativity". In other words, daydreaming at work may help you to come up with solutions to your problems. It's also suggested that daydreaming can provide a sort of mental escape, both from the difficulty of the task, but also from the stresses of everyday life. So, it seems daydreaming might be a bit of a double-edged sword, and the extent to which it provides benefits rather than downsides depends on things like how positive the thoughts are as well as your ability to identify and control them. If you find yourself endlessly staring into space, pondering the meaning of life while you're trying to get things done, why not try a mindfulness technique? Observe the thoughts as they pop up, visualise them as clouds and watch them pass by. Alternatively, when you've got some time to yourself, instead of reading a book or listening to music, why not let yourself get lost in thought?

Do you want an unbreakable phone? 24 Sep 2026

For many worldwide, smartphones are used for everything from financial transactions to social media. So when screens break or crack, it can feel like life itself comes to a halt. Long-time US glassmaker Corning has spent more than a decade making smartphone glass stronger. These devices are typically a much higher percentage of a person's GDP in emerging regions, so durability and longevity of that phone becomes a much more critical feature than in other developed countries. Corning founded in 1851 has pivoted with the times. In 1879, Thomas Edison went to Corning for glass for his light bulb. Corning's glasses used in the windows for NASA's space shuttles. In the 1950s, Corning became a household name with Corningware cookware, and Steve Jobs used it for the iphone. Now Corning dominates the worldwide smartphone glass industry. Its latest product Gorilla Glass Victus is even tougher, says the company. Whenever we develop a new glass, we set the bar high. The new glass must be clearly better than our current flagship product and far superior to the competition. Corning said they were able to improve both drop and scratch performance at the same time, a first in the industry. Gorilla Glass Victus can drop from two meters in height, which is taller than I am, onto a rough surface like asphalt and has 2x better scratch performance than our previous glass. So the next time you drop your phone and it miraculously doesn't shatter, it's most likely thanks to this company in upstate New York.

Saving Senegal's Forests 23 Sep 2026

The end result is a carbon-neutral organic charcoal that does not involve chopping down trees. The mixture is pressed and stored, resulting in about 150 pallets of biochar per day. The initiative is diversifying the economy of a rural region where many eke out a living from livestock and fishing. First of all, this biochar protects the forest. It protects our homes, it protects our supplies, it protects women, it protects the forest that no longer burns, it protects our lives. It is healthy. We thank God for this. Biochar production has been launched in 18 villages in the region by the Nebeday ecological association, a name that means "tree" in the Wolof of language. To fight deforestation, the group also plants trees in big cities and small villages alike. Since the beginning of the year, they have planted more than a million trees throughout the country. Nebeday director Jean Geopp says that putting straw to good use has an added advantage. Straw, which is the raw material of our biochar, in fact conveys thousands of bushfires across the country in the dry season. So reducing this straw is reducing bushfires, and, therefore, preventing young trees from dying in the forest. So by consuming one kilogram of straw charcoal, we save the forest twice. The benefits can be seen in Senegal's Djilor Forest, patrolled by ranger Biram Gning, who was born nearby. Gning lacks the authority to arrest those he catches cutting down trees, rather, he reports infractions to a local village chief. Gning says rising delta waters have salted the land, posing an additional environmental challenge. Deforestation is caused by, one, the harmful cutting of trees, illegal cutting by the population. Two, there are brushfires, which can ravage miles of forest. Three, the advance of salt from the sea to the forests. The African Union's Great Green Wall initiative is focusing on the Sahel among other regions to prevent desertification. The biochar project and efforts to combat deforestation are a vital piece of the puzzle.

African-American drivers face discrimination 22 Sep 2026

Driving While Black, a documentary by Ric Burns, chronicles the discrimination and violence African-Americans have often encountered while driving. In order to understand what's happening today, I felt strongly, we felt strongly that you had to go all the way back to slavery because that's the point where freedom is denied and mobility is denied. The film documents how during the US Antebellum era plantation owners employed slave patrols to monitor and punish slaves who tried to escape. It portrays these slave catchers as a precursor to white supremacists and some local sheriffs of the post-slavery Jim Crow era, who targeted African-American motorists from the 1920s to the 1960s. Liberty is locomotion. It was a form of self-empowerment. You drive automobile, you get to go where you want when you want, not sit in the back of the bus, but also an opening to a whole world of challenge as you now must navigate this spaces where African mobility is seen as worrisome and unpleasant and to be stopped by a large cohort of white Americans. Barriers grew for black motorists at night. So one of the hazards of driving was encountering people who were less interested in you being in that particular neck of the woods. And I say neck of the woods, a neck in the woods, you know, watch out for being lynched or being harassed or terrified. How do you navigate the segregated highways of America if you're an African-American? Where if your daughter needs to go to the bathroom, if you need to put gasoline in your automobile, if God forbid you have a medical emergency, where are you going to sleep, where are you going to eat, where are you going to get your hair done? The Negro Motorist Green Book listed such places. It was published in 1936 by New York postal carrier Victor Hugo Green and put small African-American businesses across the country on the map. Eventually, says Ric Burns, the expansion of America's highways offered a level of protection to African-American drivers, giving them alternatives to state and local roads. However, the film shows African-American drivers continue to be racially profiled and disproportionately likely to be stopped by the police. And so if people want to say, what is this thing? Structural racism, systemic racism, which has this kind of like abstract quality at first glance, it's not abstract, it's profoundly concrete.

Portable fan problems 21 Sep 2026

They could be the hottest accessory of an even hotter summer. As temperature records were smashed across Europe and other parts of the world, portable electric fans could be seen in the hands of millions of people. Estimates claim that up to 8 million of these devices were sold in the UK alone. The breeze that they provide will have been welcome to many, but could there be a downside to this popular product? Concerns have been raised that these fans are just another example of fast technology. That is products that are sold cheaply and are likely to be disposed of quickly. Research from Material Focus, a British pro-recycling organisation, suggests that half of all the mini fans bought will end up unused or thrown away. This is unsurprising as they can be cheap to buy and almost impossible to repair. Fans contain a mix of different materials – plastic casing, copperwiring and a lithium-ion battery among other components. This means that a considerable amount of natural resource is used in their production, and that they can be complex to recycle and dispose of sustainably. There are more immediate safety risks from portable fans. The London Fire Brigade has reported cases of cheaply-made portable fan batteries catching fire or exploding while being charged. Waste disposal companies in the UK have warned that the lithium-ion batteries used by these devices are often thrown away together with household waste, and that this can lead to fires which put staff and installations at risk. It's not just fire either. The Japanese Consumer Affairs Agency reports a train passenger's hair being sucked into someone else's fan on a train. In addition, once the air around you gets hot enough, fans can even make you warmer rather than colder. As the world's climate continues to heat up, more and more of us may be tempted to reach for portable fans. But maybe we should take some time to reflect on the effect this might be having on our environment and climate.

If this continues, the country will go, become de facto bankrupt. It's not an optional thing. It is an essential thing. That's the reason I'm here." Trump continued to give his full backing to Musk's Department of Government Efficiency cost-cutting team known as DOGE. DOGE。 Federal workers are unhappy with Musk's approach and have sued to protect their jobs, as have other groups who are seeking to block DOGE from accessing government systems and slashing programs. While Musk has waved a chainsaw on stage at a political event in a bold display of his group's efforts, his official role remains unclear, which has complicated the lawsuits against DOGE. Reuters correspondent Alex Cohen.

We have made the agreements and the necessary coordination." But she said the decision to impose tariffs rested with Trump and said Mexico was ready with a plan B, C and D. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday told reporters Canada should not be blamed for the amount of fentanyl in the U.S. "We had about less than one percent when we first started talking about this many months ago. That number is significantly lower than that even now." Economists say that if Trump imposes 25 percent tariffs, which cover more than $900 billion worth of annual imports from Canada and Mexico, it would deal a serious setback to the highly integrated North American economy.
